Introducing the Experts:
Maps - James (Jim) Whitlock
Jim is a retired US Diplomat whose 38 year career had him posted in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. His early interest in maps was in part responsible for his career path, which in turn led to a vicious cycle of collection antique maps. He divides his time between Trinity and Washington, D.C.
General Items - Chris O’Dea
Chris worked for almost three decades in the telecommunications and high-tech business, Chris now operates his own business O’Dea’s Realty and Auction Room. The real estate division is actively involved in assisting clients buy and sell real estate. The auction division is engaged in estate auctioneering and appraisal with a focus on antiques and collectables of all kinds. He is a part-time resident of Trinity and has been a member of the Trinity Historical Society for many years and was the founding Chairman of the Trinity Trust. He has supported the efforts of the Trinity Historical Society conducting the annual fundraising auction, which has raised in excess of $10,000 for the Society in the last three years.
Coins, Currency and Service Medals - Mark Allston
Mark has an interest in currency, stamps and service medals. His interest in currency started when his godfather gave him some 1949 silver dollars that were struck in honour of Newfoundland’s entry into Confederation. He also gained an interest in stamps through looking at his brother’s stamp album and was amazed by the colour, variety and age of the collection. An interest was peaked in the war service medals of his father and mother which were viewed by the family around Remembrance Day.
Furniture - Ralph Clemens
Originally trained as a joiner and subsequently honed his skills in furniture making, reproduction and restoration with Freimanis Ltd. In St. John’s. During his 27 years with the Provincial Historic Resources Division, he was responsible for the reproduction and restoration of furniture for Government House, and for the Provincial Museum and Provincial Historic Sites notably Commissariat House, Bonavista Lighthouse, Mockbeggar Property and Hiscock House. Ralph is equally well known for his knowledge and skilled restoration of fine antiques and for Newfoundland vernacular furniture.
