During August Kathleen Knowling will be offering week-end painting workshops in the studio of the Twine Loft.
Kathleen Knowling paints in watercolour, oil, and acrylic. She has shown her work in Newfoundland and Labrador and in every province of Canada and throughout the United States.
In 2004 she was chosen as Canada’s representative in the exhibition Olympic Truce: Pieces of Peace organized by the Greek Government and the Commission for the European Union, an exhibition held in December, 2004 in Washinton, D.C. As well she had four solo shows during the year and a joint exhibition with artist Bonnie Leyton at R.C.A. Visual in St. John’s.
The workshops are open to all levels of experience and to painters in all media. Emphasis will be placed on the use of sketchbooks and direct observation. Students should bring their own materials as the nearest source of artist quality supplies is in St. John’s.
MATERIALS FOR WORKSHOP:
Paints--I suggest that beginners start out with a small number of colours, student quality. I consider Winsor and Newton's Cotman range good value for the money and I would myself buy the 21ml tubes of the basic palette.
Yellows --lemon yellow hue and cadmium yellow hue.
Reds --cadmium red and permanent rose
Blues -- ultramarine blue and intense blue (this is their brand name, it is generally called phthalo blue)
With the above colours you can mix most of the colours you require. Additional colours are burnt sienna, yellow ochre, dioxazine violet, cadmium orange. intense green (phthalo green),Chinese white and lamp black.
Brushes --Synthetic brushes, the BEST quality you can afford. A #4 and a #12, both rounds and a 1" flat.
Paper --Four or five full sheets of 90lb or 140lb cold press paper. A lot of suppliers have sample packs from different makers and one of these is a useful addition to your paper supplies. Papers vary from one maker to another and it is interesting to try different makes.
You will also need -- a palette to mix your paints in--a lightweight folding plastic one is good.
A lightweight board (foamcore is nice) about 15 1/2 " by 11 1/2" and bulldog clips (4) to hold the paper on the board. A container for water, paper towels or an old towel, A knapsack or pack to hold your stuff, plus your water, both for you and your paints. If you have other supplies, brushes, paints etc. by all means bring them. In watercolour there is great flexability.
One could tear the watercolour paper into four quarters each quarter 11" by 15".
