Historical Embroidery and Needlework

18th century Corded Quilting

A one day workshop

Unlike Trapunto quilting which uses two layers of fabric, this early eighteenth century cording technique is worked with hand stitching and one layer of linen. This is interspersed with pulled thread and decorative stitches and was used originally for petticoat decoration. Students will stitch a sample of this work for a small pillow or purse and suggestions for larger projects will be given.

Supplies students should bring with them are:

  • Embroidery scissors
  • An old pair of scissors to cut metal threads
  • 8 or 9 inch embroidery hoop
  • A pencil and paper for notes

Everything else will be provided in the kits, including needles.
