Join veteran NL Musicians Pamela Morgan and Kelly Russell for a fascinating two hours musical journey around Newfoundland's shores and through the shifting sands of time.
Follow the evolution of NL music; from the first settlers, bringing the music and magic of their Celtic, Saxon, and Breton forefathers with them, through the centuries on schooner and trapskiff, in outport homes, and onto the world stage.
You will hear the stylistic regional differences, become acquainted with the music, songs, and instruments, and have the opportunity to ask questions of two of the leading experts in the field. There might even be a yarn or a tall tale along the way, so if you find yourself transported or entranced, don't worry; we'll bring you safely back!
Workshop includes-
-introduction and demonstration of instruments used in traditional music- fiddle, whistle, concertina, bodhran, bouzouki, mandolin, guitar
-a musical tour of Newfoundland- tunes and songs from the various regions- emphasis on distinctive regional styles
-the "dressing" of a traditional song- a walk through of a song from its unadorned accapella state, to guitar, then the embellishing colours of arrangement.
-question and answer period
