Con O'Brien grew up in the town of Bay Bulls, 25 miles south of St
John's, on Newfoundland's Southern Shore. His family who have been there
since the 1720's, were involved in the fishing industry. The main focus of
life was the mighty codfish and many generations of the O'Brien's, executed
that fishery from Bay Bulls. Growing up in a very Irish town, like most of
the Southern Shore communities, Con comes by his musical abilities quite
naturally, drawing on his Irish heritage, song and stories were part of a
daily diet.
In 1990 he became one of the founding members of The Irish
Descendants, a musical group that from the very beginning was a going
concern. Now in their 15th year the group has toured the globe, performing
their brand of Irish/Newfoundland music. He has released 10 albums with the
band, no small feat for a Newfoundland group, and along the way have been
honered with numerous awards, including a Juno award in 1995 for the best
roots traditional album for their third recording "Gypsies And Lovers".
He has performed for the Queen of England, with every major Canadian Symphony,
heads of state from Ireland,Italy, and The United States.
Con is pleased to
be in Trinity during August, for a working vacation, and hopes you will take
the time to join him at the Twine Loft for a few songs and stories.
